FloraHolland announces the winners of the 2014 Glass Tulip Awards

NOORDWIJK, the Netherlands:  Dutch flower auction, FloraHolland has announced the winners of its coveted award, the Glass Tulip. The Glass Tulip is a FloraHolland award designed to identify the best market introduction of the year.

Over the last months, customers of FloraHolland, gathered in a specialist jury, have been voting in the categories of cut flowers, indoor plants, garden plants and concepts. Five products from each category were put through to the final.

The Glass Tulips were handed out by the Dutch TV presenter and jury chairman Rob Verlinden during a spectacular event that took place at the Hotels van Oranje in Noordwijk on Thursday January 16th.

In order to appoint a winner from each category, a jury of experts examined the products in the four categories of competitors: cut flowers, house plants, garden plants and concepts. Rob Verlinden evaluated the nominated products on the basis of practical value and trends.

In the cut flowers category, Bondeni Flowers/ Marginpar (Pvt) Ltd from Uitgeest, which won first place with its Clematis diversifolia ‘Star River’ – a fantastically innovative product that is feminine and fits the current trends. Clematis diversifolia ‘Star River’ has the character of a garden plant that fits the Zeitgeist! The jury complimented the Bondeni/Marginpar company for cultivating Clematis diversifolia ’Star River’ as a cut flower.

The Philodendron nursery Sjaak van der Sar from Zevenhuizen took first prize in the category of houseplants with its Alocasia zebrine. This plant is native to the Philippines and has a short caudex with petioles that grow to approximately 92cm long or longer, although potted specimens will be much shorter. The name ‘zebrina’was granted as a result of the pattern on the petioles. Grower Sjaak van der Sar grows them in 17, 24 and 32cm pots. For the two largest pot sizes two cuttings per pot are used to make the product more appealing to the consumer.

Ripaplant from Twello won the Glass Tulip in the category of garden plants for their Verbena Lanai Twister Blue – a fantastic, and long-flowering Verbena with a gorgeous combination of colours.

Amigo Plant VOF from Heerhugowaard was presented with the highest accolade in the category of concepts for its Glowing Star in the dark® – a great concept that lights up dark winter months. It makes a great gadget, too, and as such, it is a concept that appeals to a younger audience!
