Florists In 36 States Plan To ‘Petal It Forward’ On Oct. 24
by Society of American Florists
Posted: Friday, August 31, 2018 at 3:47PM EDTAs of late August, florists in 36 states and the District of Columbia had notified the Society of American Florists of plans to hold Petal It Forward events in their communities on Oct. 24. That leaves 14 states to go — Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming — for industry participation in all 50 states.

Support in every state, and as many cities as possible within each state, is critical to the success of Petal It Forward from a public relations standpoint, said the Society of American Florists Vice President of Marketing Jennifer Sparks.

“The more florists we have participating on October 24, the better chance of national news coverage and social media posts promoting flower power,” she explained. “We need to know where local events are happening so we can tell the media, and so you can tell your local media that you are part of an effort happening nationwide.”

Among the 19 floral designers participating in the 50th Annual Sylvia Cup Design Competition at SAF Palm Springs 2018 are 12 members of the American Institute of Floral Designers, eight past Sylvia Cup contestants — including two grand prize winners and a second runner-up winner — and three designers sponsored by state floral associations.

The winner of this year’s two-hour live floral design competition, sponsored by Certified American Grown and Smithers-Oasis and coordinated by Professional Floral Communicators – International, will take home $3,000 and complimentary registration to the next SAF convention.

Derek Woodruff, AIFD, CF, CFD, PFCI of Floral Underground in Traverse City, Michigan, and the winner of the 2016 Sylvia Cup, is making a run for another Cup.
