Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) has dismantled an alleged narco-trafficking ring that’s accused of hiding cocaine among tropical flowers in international shipments, OIJ Director Francisco Segura said.
Police arrested seven suspects – four Costa Ricans, a Colombian, a Mexican, and a Romanian, who allegedly led the gang – and raided nine properties, seizing more than US$8 million in assets.
Segura said the gang is accused of concealing small packages of cocaine within the flowers to avoid detection. The cocaine was sent from the Central American nation to Europe – primarily Germany and Austria – at least once a month.
Segura said police are investigating whether the gang was working with a cartel.
