Kenya hit by serious fertilizer shortage
Last week, HortiBiz reported that Kenya has been hit by an unprecedented shortage of fertilizer as a result of stringent rules set at the port of Mombasa to double check the quality of products being imported.

Now, Kenya’s leading flower grower and exporter Oserian Development Company has sounded the alarm over massive fertilizer shortage in the country, occasioned by these delays.

While the Kenya Bureau of Standards introduced the new measures to protect farmers from buying poor quality fertiliser, the growers are lamenting that the clearance process is now taking up to 2 months to process.

The delays, the company says, are grinding farm operations to a near halt with devastating effects.

While KEBS has traditionally certified the quality of fertilizers in the country of origin before shipment, it has introduced a new set of rules which include re inspecting all consignments at the port of entry as it seeks to tame proliferation of counterfeits.
