Memorial Day Flowers 2018
Lorena’s Fall update
My name is Lorena Rule, and yes, many of you know my Dad, Dean Rule. In 2016 I helped organize the Memorial Day Flowers Foundation event at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. 18,000 roses were paid for and sponsored by Pinnacle West Energy. Mayesh Wholesale supplied all the logistics.
Since then I’ve am full time at the Foundation where I am in charge of volunteers for all the 25+ cemeteries. Most importantly I work to get local individual and business sponsorship for the events so that the program is self-sustaining and continues to grow.
Williee has kindly offered Flowersandcents.com space to give the floral industry some updates. I will start with my visit to Beaufort National Cemetery (BNC), part of the National Register of Historic Places.
I met with Cemetery Director Sonny Peppers and Sylvia Bushey, our local event organizer. BNC hosts 500 to 800 visitors as part of its Memorial Day Ceremony. Mr. Peppers wants a rose on each of the 20,000 headstones and will guide Sylvia for local funding sources. Len Collins of Georgia State Florist has graciously supplied logistics from Miami to Sylvia’s shop.
