 Asocolflores distributed awards to the winners of the 2021 Varieties Competition

An international jury selected amongst 286 participants, those varieties that will be trendy in international markets during the next couple of years.

Bogota, Colombia. October 6, 2021 Asocolflores, the Colombian Association of Flower Exporters, with the collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture, and Procolombia, awarded prices to the winners of the 2021 Varieties Competition in the Breeder and Producer categories; selecting, at the same time, a Grand Champion for the event.

Quoting Augusto Solano, President of Asocolflores, “this competition reaffirms the commitment and boost of the floriculture industry in times of economic reactivation when, more than ever, we are committed to generate employment and exports for our country. As a business association, we believe these events show the international community that the Colombian flower growers continue working and continue to innovate and set trends within the sector”.

Traditionally, the Varieties Competition is held as part of Proflora, the most important local and international fresh cut flower exhibition around the world. Nevertheless, given the number of international visitors that this event attracts, and in view of the health warning raised by the pandemic, it was decided to postpone Proflora until 2023. Yet, the 2021 Varieties Competition was held as a Proflora 2023 preview.

Through this event and with the participation of flower producers and breeder companies, Colombia places itself as the global core of flower production, setting the foundation for exporters to conquer new markets.

The qualifying jury was composed by connaiseurs and chaired by Jaap Kras, a world´s foremost floral expert with ample background in international floriculture. 14 exquisite flower varieties received prices in two categories: Breeders and Producers.
