Hydrangeas big and bigger

Colombia: Small hydrangea producers struggle to survive

The production of hydrangeas in Colombia has been booming over the last years. They are mainly produced in the Eastern part of Antioquia and covering over 1,500 ha (November 2017, Colombian Institute of Agriculture). These hectares consist of many small producers and the number of producers increased over the last years. However, over supply, exhaustive surveillance and lack of education makes growing hydrangeas challenging and is now even forcing some to abandon their activity. This is explained by Andres Escobar of FlorAndina, a company, that has 34 farms which all together have 60 hectares of hydrangeas cultivation. According to him, sustainability should be a concern for the entire chain, from grower, trader to buyer.  Floral Updates
